Sewer Line Camera and Repair in Colorado Springs

A sewer camera inspection in Colorado Springs runs $225 to $600 and includes recorded footage plus a locate mark painted on the ground above the fault. Most main line trouble in older parts of the city comes down to roots at a clay joint, a settled belly holding water, or a cracked section under a driveway.

Signs you need this

  • Every drain in the house is slow at the same time
  • Toilets gurgle or the water level drops on its own
  • Sewage backs up into a basement floor drain or a ground floor tub
  • A sewage smell in the yard or a patch of grass that is greener than the rest
  • A dip or a soft spot in the lawn along the line to the street
  • The main line has needed clearing more than once in a year

What the camera actually shows

A sewer camera run is not a guess dressed up as a service. The camera goes in at a cleanout and travels the full lateral to where it meets the public main, and you watch the screen while it goes. What we are reading is the grade, the joints, the pipe material and anything sitting in the line. Standing water halfway along means a belly, which is a section that has settled below the fall and now holds waste. Hair-like growth at a joint means roots got in. A change in shape means the pipe is deforming. Offset joints show as a step in the wall.

The camera head carries a transmitter, so once we find the fault we trace it from the surface and paint the position and depth on the ground. That mark is what turns a full yard excavation into a short trench.

Pipe materials under Colorado Springs

The age of the house tells you a lot about what is under the yard. Homes in the Old North End and the older downtown streets were typically laid with vitrified clay in short sections. Clay is durable but the joints are the weak point, and a century of ground movement opens them. Mid century houses in Fountain and Security-Widefield often carry cast iron inside the building with clay outside it. Nineteen seventies and eighties construction brought a run of thin-walled fiber pipe that sags and delaminates. Anything built in the last few decades in Briargate, Northgate or Monument is usually PVC, which fails at bad bedding or a crushed section rather than at the joints.

Choosing between cleaning, lining and replacement

Cutting roots back and jetting the line is the right answer when the pipe is sound and the intrusion is early. It buys years, and repeating it on a schedule is a legitimate long term plan for some houses. Lining suits a pipe that is damaged but still round and still falling correctly toward the main. Full replacement is for a line that has lost its grade, collapsed, or has so many failures that patching becomes a subscription. We give you the cost of each option that genuinely applies, along with what the line will look like in five years under each one.

Digging, permits and the surface afterwards

Excavation work needs a permit and an inspection through Pikes Peak Regional Building Department, and the utility locates have to be called in before a shovel moves. If the trench runs into the public right of way or crosses the street, there is a separate city permit and a restoration standard to meet. We handle that paperwork and it is priced into the quote.

Backfill matters more than people expect. A trench that is dumped back loose will settle over a winter and leave a dip across your lawn or a crack in your drive. We bed the pipe properly, compact in lifts and restore the surface. Colorado Springs freeze and thaw cycles punish anything done casually here.

How the work runs

  1. 1

    Camera the line

A self-levelling camera goes in at the cleanout and runs to the city main. You watch the screen with us and you keep the recording.

  2. 2

    Locate and mark

We put a signal on the camera head and trace it from the surface, then paint the depth and position of the fault on the ground.

  3. 3

    Options and flat prices

Cleaning, spot repair, lining or full replacement each get a number. You get told what the line will do in five years under each one.

  4. 4

    Repair, backfill and sign-off

Permits pulled with Pikes Peak Regional Building, trench opened, repair made and inspected, then backfilled, compacted and the surface restored.

Sewer line questions

Should I camera the sewer before buying a house?

In the older parts of Colorado Springs it is one of the better inspection dollars you can spend. A general home inspection does not look inside the lateral. If the house is pre-1970 and sits on a street with mature trees, the odds of roots or a failed clay joint are real, and a replacement is a five figure surprise to inherit after closing.

How do roots get into a sewer pipe?

Old clay laterals come in short sections with mortared or gasketed joints. As the ground moves those joints open slightly. Warm, moist air escaping through the gap is exactly what a tree root grows toward, so a hair root finds the opening, gets in and then thickens inside the pipe. The Old North End and downtown streets have the tree canopy and the pipe age to make this common.

Is lining better than digging?

Lining suits a pipe that is cracked or root damaged but still holding its shape and grade. It pulls a resin sleeve through and cures it in place, so the yard and driveway stay intact. It does not fix a belly, because a liner follows the existing fall. A collapsed or badly sagging line needs excavation. The camera footage tells us which you have.

Who is responsible for the sewer line to the street?

The lateral from your house to the connection at the public main is the property owner's responsibility in most cases here, including the portion under the sidewalk and often under the street. Colorado Springs Utilities maintains the public main itself. Check your own service agreement, and check whether any line coverage you bought actually pays for excavation.

Can you work under a driveway without tearing it up?

Sometimes. Where the geometry allows it, pipe bursting or lining lets us keep a concrete drive intact and work from pits at each end. Where the fault sits at a connection or the fall has to be rebuilt, the concrete has to come up. We tell you which situation you are in before you commit, and the restoration cost is in the quote rather than added later.
